10 Interview Questions for Your Wedding Photographer

You’ve put so much time and effort into planning your wedding you’ll want every beautiful moment captured for generations to come. But how do you know which photographer is right for you? Here are some questions that you should ask (along with tips and my answers) to ensure that the photographer you choose is a good fit for you and your wedding:

1. Do you have photos of entire weddings that I can see?

A sampling of an entire event will give you the best idea of my style. You can see how I work from start to finish: getting ready, the ceremony, the reception, the portraits. Better yet, request to view one of my online proof galleries – that way you can see photos before they’re retouched. Good raw photos are indicative of even better artistically enhanced photos.

2. Do you have references I can call?
Yes, I do. When you call my references ask them: Would you recommend Poppie Studios to your best friends, and why? Was she on time? How was she dressed? Was she professional to work with throughout the entire process? Did the guests have any comments?
3. Do you post the proofs online, or will I receive negatives?
Currently I shoot both film and digital. Because of that, my proofs take an average of two weeks before they are ready for viewing. I like to get together with you in person to review them before I post them online in a private album for you. These files are untouched and are selected to show you the best of the best from your day. Once we’ve sat down in-person and selected your favorites, I’ll post them in your private album so that you can view them friends and family too.
4. Who will be photographing my wedding?
I myself will be your photographer. Unlike larger studios with multiple photographers, you get my personal attention throughout the entire process. If a photographer cannot guarantee you who exactly will be shooting your wedding, consider Poppie Studios, where you’re guaranteed a pleasurable experience.
5. When will my proofs, prints and wedding album be available?
Find out your photographer’s turnaround time. I will have your images ready for our in-person viewing session within 2-3 weeks after your wedding. Then you’ll have up to three months to choose photos from your proofs and order any prints.
6. How many pictures will you take?
On average I shoot 500 images per wedding. From those, I’ll put the best of the best unaltered images in your online proof album, approximately 300-350.

7. What type of cameras do you use, and will you have any backups in case something breaks or doesn’t work?

Because I am a professional, I have multiple Nikon camera bodies, SD cards and lenses as well as professional lighting equipment.
8. Can I see a sample contract?
As with anything legally binding, you should never sign it until you’ve had quality time to review it thoroughly. And yes, you can see my sample contract any time! If your prospective photographer won’t show you anything in writing until you’re expected to sign, run!
9. Are you part of any professional associations, or do you have extra training in your field?
I am serious and passionate about my work, which shows in my work. I keep up with the latest technology and industry standards through my membership in the Tallahassee Professional Photographers Guild (TPPG) and WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International). I also subscribe to Professional Photographer Magazineand I read other photo blogs all the time.

10. What do you charge for overtime?

If your celebration runs longer than expected, I charge my standard hourly rate for the additional time. If you’re event lasts 2 hours and 8 minutes longer than planned, I don’t charge you for three hours – I charge you for 2 hours, 8 minutes exactly.
